The Consulate and the Indian Cultural Centre organized the performance of an ICCR sponsored 8-member Contemporary Dance group (with Drummers of Manipur) led by the renowned Choreographer Mr. Astad Deboo at the Clube Hebraica in Sao Paulo on 11 January 2018. The event was graced by representatives of the government, diplomatic community, members of the Indian community and friends of India.

Astad Deboo, the pioneer of contemporary and modern dance in India, is trained in classical dance and performing art forms such as Kathak and Kathakali. Astad Deboo’s style of dance was influenced by great performers like Murray Louis; techniques of Martha Graham and collaboration with famed artistes like Pink Floyd, the Gundecha brothers, with Pina Bausch of the Wuppertal Dance Company, Germany and more recently with the Tang-ta dancers of Manipur in his quest to explore the infinite possibilities of body and space. The Astad Deboo choreographed energetic drummers of Manipur also gave a sterling performance. The entire depth and range of his experience was on display at the Hebraica in Sao Paulo in a scintillating and memorable performance which left the audience mesmerized. The visual effect was stunning as Deboo carried the audience with him on a transcendental journey, keeping them engrossed by the expressive play of his eloquent gestures and subtle graceful movements. His 9 minute swirl in a silvery costume was something unique for a man in his 70s. Acknowledging the genius of the man the audience gave him a standing ovation. The Consulate wishes him all success.

Mr. Astad Deboo also conducted a Masterclass for students at the Oficina Cultural Oswald de Andrade in Contemporary dance and the art of the drummers explaining the nuances and the intricacies in the art forms. The Department of Culture of the State of Sao Paulo helped organise the Masterclass. Mr. Deboo presented the Contemporary Art Magazine of India 'Marg' to the Cultural Centre.
