Experience India

The Consulate General of India and the Indian Cultural Centre together with the Indian Association of Sao Paulo organised an `Experience India’ event at the prestigious Unibes Cultural Centre in Sao Paulo.

The event was graced by Mr. Vijay Singh Chauhan, Consul General, Mr. Bruno Assami, Cultural Director of Unibes and Mr. Andrey Brito, International Coordinator in the Office of Foreign Affairs of the State Government.

The programme was envisioned to highlight the activities undertaken by the ICC in promoting art and culture in Brazil and through this medium bring the people of the two countries closer together. For this purpose, all the three disciplines taught in the ICC was introduced and projected to a wider audience along with a Bridal show and a mock marriage ceremony explaining the significance and meaning of the rituals related to an Indian marriage.

The event began with a Ganesh Vandana followed by a Presentation on India. The dances were performed by the Teachers and their Students who have studied the Indian classical dance forms – Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Odissi - at the Indian Cultural Centre. It was a poignant moment to see Brazilian Teachers and Brazilian students mastering the classical Indian dances and performing in front of an adoring Brazilian audience.

Also performed was a Indian bridal show with Indian brides representing about 12 different states in India in their traditional bridal attire highlighting the important aspects of their marriage. The highlight of the event was the mock traditional marriage ceremony between Shobhan Saxena and Florencia (both happily married Indian-Brazilian couples) depicting a traditional Indian marriage complete with Kanyadan to Saat Pheras to Vidaii, with short explanatory notes on the event in Portuguese.

The programme also included a Lavni dance performance and a Bollywood medley.

With the voluntary support of the ladies of the Indian community a delectable snack feast was laid out representing various states of India.
