The Consulate General India with the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre celebrated Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2019 in the Cultural Centre. The event commenced with the lighting of the lamp against the backdrop of Sanskrit shlokas sung by Brazilian students learning Hindi and Sanskrit at the Centre. The distinguished Indians were felicitated and the Gandhi Satyagraha Champaran Quiz competition prizes were given away by the Consul General to the proud winners - Mrs. Suja Venugopal (first prize), Mr. Shashank Mishra (second Prize) and Mr. Joao Signorelli (third prize - Brazilian Gandhian). A distinguished panel of speakers addressed the event.

In his opening remarks Consul General spoke on the significance of PBD and called on the Indian community to contribute to the making of a New India. Mr Shobhan Saxena, President of the Indian Association spoke on the theme of PBD "Role of Indian Diaspora in building a New India" and elaborated on the background of the Indian diaspora and the political, economic and cultural contributions made by them in the host countries as well as how they contribute to building a new India; Mr. Tushar Parikh, CEO of TCS Brazil spoke on "Startups and Innovations which have social impact on India" and elaborated on how India is poised to benefit in business 4.0 by moving to the next generation of technological innovation and ecosystems; Swami Tattwarathananda Saraswati, a distinguished Swami settled in Brazil for over 20 years spoke on the "Significance of the Indian spiritual heritage for the Indian Diaspora" and touched upon the Indian value system and the spiritual heritage and how it has contributed to forge linkages with India for the diaspora; Dr. Hanumant Sawant, eminent scientist spoke on 'Indian Diasporas contribution to scientific Development in India" and touched upon the immense contribution Indian space programme has made to Brazilian space science and in the setting up of INPE, and Dr. Sanjay Kumar, TCI of the Centre spoke on the "Role and Importance of Hindi for the Diaspora" and how language embodies the spirit of a nation and the role played by Hindi in linking the diaspora with India. The event was also addressed by Mr. Roberto Paranhos, President of the Brazil India Chamber of Commerce who spoke about his experience of the Indian diaspora' s contribution to Brazil and India.

The occasion was used to also celebrate Hindi Diwas with Consul General reading out the message of the Prime Minister on Hindi Diwas and Sanskrit shlokas and Hindi poems sung by Brazilian students as part of the celebration of Hindi Diwas put together by the Director of the Cultural Centre Ms. Puja Kaushik. Hindi picture dictionary were given to the participants. The event concluded with a graceful Bharatanatyam performance as part of the event. About 80 persons attended the event.
