Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2020 celebrations in Sao Paulo

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2020 was celebrated in Sao Paulo by the Consulate General of India, Sao Paulo and Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Sao Paulo at a function organised at the Centre on 9 January 2020.

2. The Government of India celebrates Pravasi Bharatiya Divas on 9 January every year to mark the achievements of overseas Indian community and its contribution towards the development of India. The day commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to India on 9 January 1915. The Government of India has taken several measures over the recent years to enhance its engagement of Indian Diaspora.

3. The highlight of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2020 was the interaction of External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar with representatives of Indian Diaspora across the globe, which was telecast at the event in Sao Paulo. Besides his address highlighting measures taken to intensify and strengthen engagement with Diaspora under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar answered queries from members of Indian diaspora from eight cities across the world.

In his address to the gathering in Sao Paulo, Consul General Amit Kumar Mishra highlighted the achievements of Indian community worldwide and its role in strengthening India’s ties with other countries. He mentioned that beside people to people ties, Indian community was playing an increasingly important role in political, commercial and cultural spheres. Consul General, along with members of Indian community, unveiled thecommemorative postage stamps released by the Government of India on the occasion of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji.

5. The cultural performances at the event included Yoga demonstration by the students of Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, and a Bharatanatyam performance by Brazilian artist Barbara Malavogglia. The cultural performance was followed by light refreshments. The PBD-2020 celebration was attended by about 70 members of Indian Diaspora and Brazilian friends of India.
