Registration of Birth of a Minor Child

For obtaining Indian nationality, the birth of a newborn child whose either or both parents are Indian nationals must first be registered on the Indian Citizenship Online portal of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Important Note

  • The birth registration must be completed at the Consulate within one year from the date of birth of the child.
  • If registered within one year, the child is eligible for "Citizen of India by Descent" under Section 4(1) of the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955.
  • If not registered within one year, the case requires special approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs, and nationality is granted based on merits.
