Registration of Birth of a Minor Child
For obtaining Indian nationality, the birth of a newborn child whose either or both parents are Indian nationals must first be registered on the
Indian Citizenship Online
portal of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Important Note
- The birth registration must be completed at the Consulate within one year from the date of birth of the child.
- If registered within one year, the child is eligible for "Citizen of India by Descent" under Section 4(1) of the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955.
- If not registered within one year, the case requires special approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs, and nationality is granted based on merits.
How to Apply (Step-by-Step Process)
Step 1 – Online Application
Applicants must submit applications on both portals:
Step 2 – Print the Applications
After successful submission on both portals, print the completed application forms.
Step 3 – Submit Documents at the Consulate
Submit the printed forms and original documents at the Consulate for Registration, Birth Certificate, and subsequent Indian Passport issuance.
Documents Required
- Online Application Copy: From the Indian Citizenship Online portal.
- SEWA Application Form: Generated for Birth Certificate.
- Local Birth Certificate:
- Original document
- English translation (if applicable)
- One photocopy
- Passports of Both Parents: First and last page copies (Originals required for verification).
- Undertaking: Signed by either parent confirming the child has not acquired any other nationality.
- Foreign National Parent (if applicable): Proof that the child has not acquired the nationality of the foreign parent.
Important Advisory: Applications submitted after one year of birth face significant delays due to mandatory MHA approval. Early registration is strongly advised.
