In case of the death of an Indian national in Brazil, the death should be reported to the Consulate General of India at the earliest. After cancellation of the passport of the deceased and making the necessary entries in the Consular records, the Consulate will issue a Death Certificate on the basis of the death certificate issued by the local Brazilian authorities.

Application Procedure

Applicants are required to apply through the SEWA Portal under relevant service.

After submitting the application online, applicants should submit the printed and signed application form along with the required documents at the Consulate.

Documents Required

A. For Death Certificate

  1. Printed copy of the application form submitted through the SEWA Portal, duly signed by the applicant/informant.

  2. Copy of identity document of the informant/applicant.

  3. Death Certificate issued by Brazilian authorities – Original along with English translation and one photocopy.

  4. Original passport of the deceased for cancellation by the Consulate.

  5. Copy of visa / residence permit / Brazilian identity document of the deceased.

  6. In case of death due to unnatural causes or homicide, copy of post-mortem report, if conducted by local authorities.

  7. Letter from the next of kin addressed to the Consulate, enclosing copy of identity document, confirming relationship with the deceased.

B. For Transportation of Mortal Remains to India

In addition to the documents listed in section A, the following documents are also required:

  1. Embalming Certificate issued by the competent authority.

  2. Certificate of sealing of coffin issued under inspection of the competent authority in Brazil.

  3. Medical certificate confirming that the body is free from infectious diseases and is safe for transportation by air.

  4. Letter from the next of kin addressed to the Consulate enclosing copy of identity document, confirming relationship with the deceased and undertaking responsibility for performing the last rites upon receipt of the mortal remains in India.

C. For Transportation of Ashes to India

In addition to the documents listed in section A, the following documents are also required:

  1. Cremation Certificate issued by the competent authority/crematorium.

  2. Certificate from the crematorium confirming that the urn contains only the ashes of the deceased.

  3. Copy of Death Certificate of the deceased.

  4. Copy of passport of the person carrying the ashes along with travel itinerary/flight details.

Important Note: Electronic clearance obtained through the e-Clearance for Afterlife Remains (eCARe) portal of the Government of India is mandatory for transportation of Mortal Remains/Ashes to India.
